just as the chino/koreanovela trend over here was ebbing, enter the filipino fantaserye (ABSCBN) or telepantasya (GMA)...
suddenly, we were churning out our own line of spandex-clad superheroes, half-man half-animal creatures, and other bizaare and intriguing beings...
1- marinela 2- mulawin 3- kristala 4- darna 5- encantadia 6- sugo 7- kampanerang kuba
which do you like best? hate most?
nakakatulong ba talaga ang mga ganitong panoorin sa pag-unlad ng sining at kultura ng mga Pinoy?
ano sa palagay mo?

before i begin my rant, er nudge, ang marinela ata hindi fantaserye... i think you're referring to that series with the half-human and half-fish but for the life of me i couldn't remember the title at the moment. oh well. about the sudden boom of fantaseryes and from the standpoint of an arts student, i've always been against the what i refer to as the 'chopsuey content' in our entertainment media (esp. tv shows and movies). take for instance 'kampanerang kuba', the story starts with an unattractive young hunchback girl living in isolation in the bell tower. can you say 'hunchback of notre dame'? in an ep i saw the girl sleeping and the three nuns(?) said the only thing that could wake her up is with the kiss from her true love. can you say 'sleeping beauty'? in 'encantadia' naman, i think this is the show where there's this - er - little thingamabob - i dunno what to call it basta it's short and brown and it talks and it acts like some sort of a guru or something. can anybody say 'starwars' i find it hard to watch these shows and when i muster enough courage to do so i find it harder to disassociate them from their foreign counterparts. then again there are these staple elements called formulas or archetypes (to borrow a term from carl jung) - they are those recurring characters or symbols which apparently exists in literary art forms (also applicable in tv shows and movies) - same genre or not. omg, i'm sounding more and more like my thesis it's scaring me...

explain po... medyo you lost me there...

archetypes are like character or theme prototypes which is embedded in every piece of art but more evident in literature. for example, for characters: the archetypes are the hero, the damsel in distress, the hero's sidekick, the villain, etc. or for the theme: the quest for [replace either with person or object or whatever]

ah... do you postulate then that the local fantaseryes have no storytelling merit given their use/abuse of archetypes from foreign fiction? ayan, i'm emulating my thesis adviser... consider this a mini defense practice, hehe

personally, natutuwa ako sa encantadia. everything else... medyo eurgh. pareho tayo ;D it can get rather predictable every now and then... pero i'm gratified to see that at least the writers remember our own folklore from time to time.... can't think of examples right now... manunuod muna ako mamaya and then post ko

what i'm saying is, if you want to copy from other sources, then you should be creative. let's make that thingamabob in 'encantadia' for example. in fantasy stories (also in epics) the archetype of the guru or spiritual guide is common. however, instead of making a little brown thing why don't you get a little person to play the part? i think it's more believable if that's the case

medyo matagal na ang usapan na ito. buhayin lang natin ninch, 'yung thingamabob na 'yun, 'di ko rin talaga gusto. i think they explained before why they can't hire little people to play the little people in encantadia because even the little people wouldn't be... well, little enough. and i admit, medyo may pagka-plot device ang use sa kanya. "lovable" naman raw. hahaha. after watching encantadia, i can say that even if they started with rip-offs (from lord of the rings, etc) at least they didn't succumb to the tried-and-tested formulas na rampant sa pinoy tv shows. and if you watched the last week of the show, hindi lahat ng characters may happy ending. some even died during the war. isang nagbalik loob para lang mamatay, isa namang nagbalik-loob at the moment of death (may pagka-ANGEL na hindi, gets?) ayun. maganda naman. in furness ngayon, nagsimula na ang Etheria. and while shaky yung simula n'ya, maganda na ang flow ng story ngayon. at ibang-iba na s'ya from the regular pinoy tv fare. it's written for a smart audience. dahil sa success ng encantadia, na sinuportahan ng mga aling bebang at ng mga aling tasing, pumayag mag-risk ang gma 7 with a show na sobrang out there and concept para sa isang pinoy teleserye. kung 'di pa kayo nanunuod. subukan n'yong panuorin. kung ma-dissapoint kayo, ililibre ko kayo ng softdrinks. hehehe.

even if i don't watch it regularly, it's good to know na may effort to deviate from the norm. and that's the key when fiction starts out by copying popular work, and most of them do... with regards to the improved production designs, yes, this is indeed very encouraging... mas exciting mag cosplay, ;D

Lionheart; isa rin yan sa nagpapanuod sa akin hehehe. theDominatrix; I don't call it lovable. hahaha. I actually don't like it. hindi lang network ang nagt-trabaho to keep the audience. pati writers. especially when the network mucks up any chance of having a good series by casting awful actors.

yes! gma 7 is gearing up for a new fantasy series: Atlantika. it's more Encantadia than Darna, so I have high hopes. It also has the same director (and crew, i'm guessing) as Encantadia. It stars Dingdong Dantes, Iza Calzado, Jean Garcia, Cherry Pie Picache, Arthur Solinap, Paolo Contis, Katrina Halili, Chynna Ortaleza, among others.
